MESA, Ariz. - Sonny Gray, coming off the worst year of his career, will start the 2017 season on the disabled list.
Manager Bob Melvin said Thursday morning that Gray, a 2015 All-Star and Cy Young finalist, will be shut down for three weeks with a moderate lat strain and is unlikely to pitch for Oakland until late April.
“You don’t expect to get tested like this right away,” Melvin said.
Gray felt the injury after his most recent start Tuesday but did not believe it to be major, and he was surprised by the MRI results, according to Melvin.
