MESA, Ariz. — Outfielder Jake Smolinski, who told The Chronicle earlier in the week that his sore right shoulder wasn’t responding to treatment as well as he hoped, will have surgery to determine the extent of the problem Friday in Scottsdale.
Manager Bob Melvin said there is no timetable for Smolinski’s return because the details of the injury will not be known until the procedure, which will be performed by Dr. Doug Freedberg.
With Smolinski out, should the A’s decide to keep a fifth outfielder, non-roster players Alejandro De Aza and Jaff Decker are the top candidates.
