MESA, Ariz. -- Speedy A's prospect Jorge Mateo has been slowed down by a lingering left knee issue, which will prevent him from game action when the Cactus League season opens Friday.

Mateo suffered a slight sprain of the knee while playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic, according to A's manager Bob Melvin, and he's having trouble decelerating in the early going of camp.

"He's going to be a little bit behind on games," Melvin said. "We weren't really sure how he would respond here. Straight-ahead [running] is fine with him, but the issue he's having is slowing down, and he gets going pretty fast.
