A’s pitcher Sonny Gray to miss opening day with lat injury

MESA, Ariz. — The A’s won’t have the services of ace pitcher Sonny Gray when they open the season next month.

Manager Bob Melvin revealed Thursday that Gray has a “moderate lat strain” and he will be shut down for the next three weeks. Gray, who had an MRI that revealed the injury, was scheduled for another doctor’s appointment and wasn’t available to the media Thursday.

“It’s very disappointing for him,” Melvin said of Gray, who was limited by injuries to just 22 starts last year. “He came to camp ready to go, worked as hard as he’s ever worked even though he’s a hard working kid to begin with.
