TORONTO -- Frequent flier Matt Olson was optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Monday, just three days after being summoned for National League play in New York, as the A's moved north of the border with an extra reliever in tow.
With the A's resuming American League play in Toronto, they opted for an eighth reliever over an extra bench player -- although Josh Smith, recalled from Nashville, was technically the seventh man in Oakland's bullpen on Monday, with righty Frankie Montas delayed by visa issues in New York.
Montas wasn't expected to join the A's in Toronto until Tuesday, making the addition of Smith all the more necessary.
