CLEVELAND - Marcus Semien has taken a major step in returning from wrist surgery. The A’s shortstop played catch Monday for the first time since the April 18 procedure to repair a hairline fracture.

Semien hasn’t begun to swing a bat with both hands yet, and manager Bob Melvin said there is still no target date for Semien’s return - he will have to build back up his throwing strength and will have to start hitting again, then will go on a rehab assignment.

“Big news,” Melvin said. “We’re not close on putting together a timetable for him, but the fact he’s playing catch is significant.
