A’s manager Bob Melvin mourns death of former team chaplain

KANSAS CITY — When Bob Melvin took over as manager of the A’s in 2011, he immediately became close with team chaplain Donnie Moore. So when Melvin learned Moore died Friday at the age of 60, the manager spent some time before Saturday’s game against the Royals talking about the impact Moore made on his life.

“He was more than just a chaplain to us,” Melvin said of Moore, who was the A’s team chaplain for 29 years. “He tailored his sermon sometimes to messages that I wanted to get out. He lived for our team and watched us intently, even on the days that he wasn’t there.
