A’s hire Matt Williams as third base coach

Matt Williams is the A’s new third base coach, the team announced Friday.

The longtime Giants third baseman — and five-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glover — is no stranger to coaching. Williams served as Washington’s manager for two seasons, earning National League Manager of the Year honors in 2014 following his first year there. He also spent five years with the Diamondbacks as first base coach (2010) and third base coach (2011-13, ‘16).

Williams replaces Steve Scarsone, the A’s minor league manager who had filled in as third-base coach since June when Oakland juggled its staff to accomodate Mark Kotsay’s leave of absence.
