A’s edge Astros to avert sweep

HOUSTON – Over a three-game series in Houston, the A’s received three solid performances from their starting pitchers. Only one led to a win.

On Sunday, the A’s relied on Jharel Cotton’s pitching, and a breakdown of the Astros’ defense. Houston’s throwing woes in the first inning resulted in two errors and two runs, on one play.

Cotton’s four-hit pitching over 6 2/3 innings, and a 10-hit attack, lifted the A’s past the Astros 3-2 at Minute Maid Park. The A’s averted a three-game sweep to the Astros, who enjoy a 12-3 season series lead with four games remaining between the two American League West clubs.
