The A’s worked out Austin Beck at the Coliseum last week, and the high school outfielder had an impressive batting practice. His first swing, the ball easily cleared the left-field wall, and he hit many more pitches to the stadium’s outer regions.
Monday night, the A’s selected Beck with the sixth overall pick.
Beck is from North Davidson High School in Arcadia, N.C, where he put up cartoonish numbers. He hit .590 with a .700 on-base percentage, 12 homers and 38 RBIs.
In his final high school game, he homered three times.
