The Athletics placed infielder Chad Pinder on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain Saturday and recalled infielder Franklin Barreto, the club's top prospect per MLBPipeline.com, from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move.
Barreto, 21, is batting .281 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs in 68 games for Nashville in 2017. Acquired by Oakland as part of the November 2014 trade that sent Josh Donaldson to Toronto, Barreto has ascended quickly through the A's Minor League system.
He has played mostly shortstop during his stint with the Sounds, and he figures to help fill the void left by Pinder, who was pulled from Friday night's game in the sixth inning versus the White Sox after trying to field a ground ball.
