MESA, Ariz. -- The A's have an agreement in place on a one-year contract with free-agent right-hander Trevor Cahill, the club announced.
Barring any setbacks, Cahill provides immediate pitching depth to a team in dire need of some, after learning Saturday that right-hander Jharel Cotton will undergo Tommy John surgery. Cahill presumably wouldn't be ready to start when the regular season opens but could be a rotation option down the road. He also has bullpen experience.

Cahill, 30, began his career with the A's, who selected him out of high school in the second round of the 2006 Draft.
