A’s, Bob Melvin set for doubleheader against Astros

Traditional doubleheaders — as opposed to the day-night variety — don’t happen very often in the majors anymore, but there is one at the Coliseum on Saturday.

Fans get two games for the price of one as the A’s host Houston. Oakland scheduled the old-fashioned doubleheader after the Astros-A’s game April 16 was rained out.

A’s manager Bob Melvin grew up in the Bay Area and often went to traditional doubleheaders at the Coliseum and at Candlestick Park. In his pregame news conference Saturday, Melvin said what made those doubleheaders enjoyable was, sure enough, the baseball.

“The fact that you got to go to the ballpark for two games — and then I’d show up sometimes for batting practice and make it a complete day,” Melvin said.
