A’s bench depth continues to be a limiting factor

NEW YORK – Trevor Plouffe didn’t much like the ball strike calls from umpire Will Little Saturday and told him so. But in the eighth inning with the game on the line, the A’s third baseman reined himself in.

As currently constructed , the A’s only have a three-man bench, and first baseman Yonder Alonso wasn’t available. Add to that the ejection earlier in the inning of second baseman Jed Lowrie, and things were tight for Oakland.

Another ejection wasn’t on the books.

“You’ve got to think through the situation,” Plouffe said Sunday. “Jed was out and Yonder wasn’t available.
