Eric Nelson’s 2017 was unimaginably bad. The longtime A’s fan was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer, endured numerous surgeries and rounds of chemotherapy, and just as he was getting through that, his Folsom house burned. His cat, Swagathor, was killed in the fire.
“It’s nuts,” Nelson said. “If you were to write a screenplay, a Hollywood producer would turn it down as too improbable.
