It has been one accolade after another since Karter Schult took his last Northern Iowa snap on Nov. 19.
Friday night, the defensive end added a huge honor.
Schult received the Buck Buchannan Award as the FCS’ top defensive player, becoming the fourth Missouri Valley Football Conference player and first from UNI to win the award. It’s the latest honor on an extensive list, which includes AP FCS All-American, MVFC defensive player of the year and appearances on many other all-American and scholar-athlete lists.
Schult dominated from start to finish this season. He led all Division I levels — FBS and FCS — in sacks (17) and accounted for at least one quarterback takedown in 10 of UNI’s 11 games this year.
