Northern Iowa athletics announces salary reductions, suspension of incentives for 2021

In an effort to mitigate an expected budget shortfall of more than $1 million caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the University of Northern Iowa athletics department announced several cost-saving measures Thursday. These efforts began July 1.

Panthers coaches and staff members will take temporary salary reductions for the 2021 fiscal year. Additionally, all contract incentives for head coaches and athletics director David Harris have been suspended.

The salary reductions impact all employees making more than $41,000 annually. The reductions are up to 12.5% for the highest-paid employees and go down to 5% for the lowest tiers.

The move comes comes after UNI announced April 30 that Harris and the head coaches of the Panthers' five ticketed sports — Mark Farley (football), Ben Jacobson (men's basketball), Tanya Warren (women's basketball), Bobbi Petersen (volleyball) and Doug Schwab (wrestling) — would all take 10% salary reductions for May and June.
