Freshman Jason Xu tied for third in men’s epee Sunday to provide the highlight of a successful weekend as the UNC men’s and women’s fencing teams competed at the 43rd annual Garret Penn State Open.
The event was held in the White Building on the Penn State campus and included fencers from Ohio State, University of Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Temple, Brown, and Yale, in addition to the host Nittany Lions.
The Tar Heel women competed on Saturday, with solid performances in all weapons. Top finishers were Gabrielle D’Astoli, who placed 13th in women’s foil, and Diana Philpot, who place 13th in women’s sabre.
