North Carolina pushed crosstown rival NC State to overtime on Saturday, but crucial mistakes and missed opportunities led to its ninth defeat of the season.
After taking a 28-21 lead midway through the fourth quarter, North Carolina relinquished a game-tying score just three minutes later. Neither team was able to score again in regulation, and the game went into overtime.
It was there that a missed field goal off the foot of UNC kicker Freeman Jones missed just outside the left upright, and opened up an opportunity for NC State to score on their side of the field.
