BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- A Joey Ward pin and major decisions by James Szymanski and Danny Chaid lifted North Carolina to a 23-15 win over Gardner-Webb Friday night at Paul Porter Arena. The Tar Heels closed out their regular season slate in winning fashion thanks to victories in six of 10 weight classes.
Szymanski opened the dual with an 8-0 major over Landon LoAlbo at 125 pounds. The win was Szymanski's first major of the year and snapped a five-match losing streak for the Shoreham, New York, sophomore.
After Philip Anderson topped Nicholas Lirette at 133, seventh-ranked Ward put an exclamation point on his regular season with a first-period pin of Dallas Roemer.
