Garrett Rank, a former Canadian Mid-Amateur champion and currently an NHL referee, defeated University of North Carolina junior Ben Griffin 1 up in the round of 64 at the 2016 United States Golf Amateur Championship played at the Oakland Hills Country Club.

Griffin entered the round of 64 match play after finishing shooting 66-72 and tying for 11th place in stroke play. The Chapel Hill native shot 1-over-par today, but Rank won five holes to Griffin’s four to advance.

Griffin and Rank both won four of the first 11 holes, but Rank’s decisive win on the 14th was the only one in the last eight holes the players didn’t halve.
