It’s hard to admit in the moment, but it takes a little time to vacate the responsibility that is necessary to just shout at the heavens, “dammit, these people are as good at football as us and I’m worried.” God that’s annoying. Real bother. Bugs the hell out of you.
There’s nothing more annoying in sports than the slow melt of they-are-better-than-us. The luck is a bother; if that guy who got lucky is fortunate, then cool, because screw that guy, he sucked anyhow.
When that same outfit makes stuff work by just being better than you, by out-scrambling, out-bothering, out-talenting you, it scalds.
