New York Islanders center Mathew Barzal was fined $5,000 Tuesday for cross-checking Jan Rutta of the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 5 of their Stanley Cup playoff semifinal series on Monday night.

The amount represents the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.

As time expired in the second period of Tampa Bay’s eventual 8-0 win, Barzal and Rutta began shoving near the Lightning bench before Barzal cross-checked Rutta in the face.
