Randomness is one of the most interesting things about sports; anything can happen at any moment, any player is capable of doing something unexpected, and any team can win it all, even when the rest of the league counts them out.
Or, at least, that’s how it’s supposed to work.
Variance and randomness introduce not just our favorite sports cliches like “they don’t play the games on paper,” but also give fans a reason to watch. Just because a team has talent, doesn’t mean they can pack it in and glide into a championship. They still must perform.
