The Farce of Tackling Stats

Michael McKnight wrote a great piece for the Sports Illustrated NFL preview issue about how messed up tackling stats are. I'm quoted in here, along with the guys from PFF. There are problems with tackling stats that can't be fixed by the league -- the league isn't going to ever track "tackle opportunities" or "broken tackles," let's be real. The biggest problem with tackling stats that the league can actually fix is the fact that the NFL is depending on official scorers to get them right on game day. The official scorers are only human.
