In two weeks and change, a new class of football players will be drafted into the NFL, creating the possibility of money which could secure them for a lifetime if handled appropriately.

For far too many, that money barely lasts a decade.

Via Ben Leubsdorf of the Wall Street Journal comes a report that nearly one out of every six NFL players goes bankrupt within 12 years of retirement.

Those numbers, compiled by the National Bureau of Economic Research, paint a disturbing picture.
