A day after trading away a key piece of their defense, the Patriots have traded for a potential ace on offense.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that the Patriots have acquired tight end Martellus Bennett from the Chicago Bears for a late-round pick, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The Bears will also send back a late-round pick to New England.
ESPN's Adam Schefter had the first report of the deal.
The deal represents a potential coup for the Patriots, who can pair the playmaking Bennett with All-Pro Rob Gronkowski to form a formidable 1-2 punch at tight end not seen in Foxborough since Aaron Hernandez was in town.
