Peyton Manning fought back tears Monday as he officially announced his retirement after 18 seasons in the NFL.

"There's something about 18 years," said Manning, who needed a few moments to compose himself before speaking. "Eighteen is a good number. Today I retire from pro football."

Manning thanked his coaches, teammates, family, agent and fans.

"I revere football," he said. "I love the game. So you don't have to wonder if I'll miss it. Absolutely, absolutely I will."

Manning also thanked the Colts and the city of Indianapolis, before thanking the Broncos.

"Grateful is word that comes to my mind when I think of the Denver Broncos," he said.
