Ray Evans established himself as a star both on the football field and basketball court at Kansas. He helped the Jayhawks basketball team finish 22-6 during the 1942-43 season then served in the U.S. Air Force before returning to Kansas to play football in 1946 and 1947, according to the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Evans played for the Steelers in 1948 and led the team with 924 yards passing, although he did toss 17 interceptions in 137 attempts. He was second on the team with 99 carries for 343 yards and caught seven passes for 93 yards.
