Whenever there's a new strategic wrinkle in the NFL—the Wildcat, the read-option, the RPO, "positionless" Honey Badger defenders, and so forth—many of my colleagues are either assigned or volunteer to write reported features on the buzzy new tactic. On the first day of the combine, they speed-run the coach-and-exec podium interviews asking about the hot new strategic fad in search of useful soundbytes or, sometimes accidentally, actual wisdom. Everyone publishes their features in early March, and many of them are thorough and informative, but no one—not a single human being on the planet—reads any of them.
