The St. Louis Rams have just drafted Missouri defensive end Michael Sam in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft, making him the first openly gay player in NFL history.

Sam was projected as either a late-round pick or an undrafted free agent, mostly due to several analysts and scouts' projections that he won't be able to evolve into an every-down player in the NFL.

However, the Rams are looking past that at someone who won the 2013 SEC co-Defensive Player of the Year Award -- intrigued by his football potential, while also letting his sexuality be just that -- his.

We will have more on this story as it develops.
