Newcastle United were saved from having to pay sacked manager Steve McClaren up to £1million in compensation – by Championship rivals Derby County.
McClaren lost his job at St James’ Park in March 2016 and was paid £674,000 in wages during his dire nine months in charge of the Magpies.
On top of that, a figure of £1m is also mentioned as ‘compensation for loss of office’ in the North East club’s accounts at Companies House.

But Newcastle actually only paid a portion of that and were able to stop paying their former manager when he found work so soon after his sacking.
