Steve Watson is proud to have been part of the last Premier League generation to directly associate with fans rather than socialise in VIP lounges or private clubs.
With Newcastle team-mates Alan Shearer and Tino Asprilla, he'd jump into a cab after home games at St James' Park and head for the Bigg Market or Quayside in town.
'Anybody who wanted to come and talk to you and have a pint was welcome,' he recalls. 'If they'd thought you'd had a nightmare in the game, they would tell you.




'We were part of the city and you might have 15 of 16 players out in the middle of town together.
