Newcastle fan's ingenious way to get round travel costs for FA Cup clash

Facing a 500-mile round trip to watch his side play Oxford United in the fourth round of the FA Cup, one intrepid Newcastle supporter took drastic action in a bid to cut the cost of his journey.

After seeking the advice of a friend, thrifty Toon fan Johnny Haywood decided against paying an exorbitant amount for a single train ticket and instead purchased 56 separate "split" tickets to cover his gruelling trek.

Split tickets -- i.e, separate tickets for each leg of the journey -- are often cheaper than booking one ticket for the entire trip.

Indeed, the splits knocked a full £56 off the overall price but, as Johnny swiftly discovered, they can be a nightmare to organise as he and his girlfriend were left to juggle 28 tickets each!
