Newcastle owner Mike Ashley says he does not have the money to allow Rafa Benitez to compete with the Premier League’s top teams and the manager must work with the limited funds the club generates.

Benitez said this week that he is not happy with their summer transfer business and had expected something different when he agreed to stay on after promotion in May.

Newcastle have spent around £30million on five players and Benitez has called on Ashley to ‘keep his word’ on the promise of investment.

But the Sports Direct tycoon has responded by insisting that he is simply unable to give the Spaniard the transfer kitty he craves.
