Newcastle are monitoring Bayer Leverkusen teenager Florian Wirtz and have sent scouts to watch the Germany international in his last two games ahead of heavy summer spend

Newcastle United had scouts at Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday to see the excellent Florian Wirtz score a cracker against Union St Gilloise in their Europa League quarter-final.

The midfielder netted the equaliser in the game for the hosts in the 82nd minute after Victor Boniface had opened the scoring, with the match finishing 1-0.

Newcastle were listed among the scouts again as Leverkusen visited Wolfsburg on Sunday but 19-year-old attacking midfielder Wirtz started on the bench.

He was booked after coming on in the second half, though the game finished 0-0.

Wirtz is regarded as one of the best talents in Germany and Leverkusen are reluctant to sell.
