Newcastle agree deal to sign Dutch defender Sven Botman from Lille for £32million... as Eddie Howe continues to strengthen his squad in the transfer window

Newcastle United have agreed a deal in principle to sign highly-rated Dutch defender Sven Botman from Lille for £32million.

Botman, 22, has completed a medical and will pen a five-year deal at St James' Park.

In a statement, the club said the 'formalities of the transfer are set to be concluded this week', after which he will be confirmed as a Newcastle player.

The Holland Under-21 centre-back was always keen on Newcastle despite interest from A.C. Milan and boss Eddie Howe had long since identified him as his top target in that position. It was an opinion shared by the club's scouting team and ownership.
