The last time Mo Diame recognised himself on a football pitch was in the colours of Hull City.
That day, at a scorched Wembley in May, the midfielder was on fire, scoring a 25-yard winner as Steve Bruce’s side won promotion to the Premier League in the play-off final against Sheffield Wednesday.
It was an awesome performance and one which persuaded Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez to activate the £4.5million release clause in Diame’s contract, earmarking him as the replacement for want-away Moussa Sissoko.

Since swapping the top-flight for the Championship, however, the Senegalese has struggled to impact, much like Sissoko at Spurs.
