Jonjo Shelvey hammered on Twitter after mindless red card for stamping on Dele Alli, with Alan Shearer labelling midfielder as 'pathetic'

Jonjo Shelvey has been widely criticised on social media for his brainless stamp on Dele Alli which saw him sent off in Newcastle's defeat by Tottenham.

The combative midfielder was trying to get the ball back quickly, Alli moved it away and Shelvey reacted by treading on Alli's ankle.

Referee Andre Marriner saw the incident and was left with no choice but to give Shelvey his marching orders and plenty of onlookers condemned the former Liverpool and Swansea man's actions.

Newcastle club legend Alan Shearer labelled Shelvey as 'pathetic' whilst Sky commentator Alan Smith believed it was one of the most stupid dismissals he has ever seen.
