Dan Ashworth finally starts working as Newcastle's new sporting director after they struck a deal with Brighton to prematurely end his gardening leave... as he begins to re-shape the club in their first summer since the Saudi-led takeover

New Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth has started work on Tyneside after the club received Premier League approval for his appointment.

The Magpies announced on May 30 that they had reached an agreement with Ashworth's former employers Brighton to release him from his contract following his resignation in February.

Ashworth, who has been appointed by Amanda Staveley's consortium to oversee the club's 'overarching sporting strategy, football development and recruitment at all age levels', will work closely with head coach Eddie Howe, academy manager Steve Harper and head of recruitment Steve Nickson.
