10 transfers that made fans very angry, including Van Persie, Cole and McManaman

There was a lot resentment on Merseyside when McManaman agreed in January 1999 to join Real Madrid for nothing. His contract was due to expire at the end of the season and this wonderful product of the Anfield youth system, then 27, wanted to play for the best team in Europe. He was criticised by some for running his contract down and chasing the money abroad, but he showed he was there to play and, between his arrival and departure four years later, won two league titles and two Champions Leagues. He was also loved by Real fans for his dedication and ability to read the game, but his time at the Bernabeu eventually came to an end just as the Galactico era was kicking off.
