The MLB trade deadline on August 1st is rapidly approaching, and the trade rumors around the New York Yankees are starting to heat up. The Yankees are 44-44 at the All-Star break, but only a few games back of a Wild Card berth - meaning the Yankees could decide to be either sellers or buyers as the deadline gets closer. With that in mind, here all the latest Yankees trade rumors:
Pineda on the block?
There is a noticeable shortage of high-quality pitchers available on the open market, but Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Yankees are thinking about dealing Michael Pineda:
Baseball people are trying to figure out which teams might be opportunistic and surprise the industry by shopping a starting pitcher who currently is thought to be unavailable.
A survey of scouts at the Futures Game produced two reasonably intriguing names: Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda and Angels righty Matt Shoemaker.
The Yankees, after winning three of four in Cleveland and entering the break at .500, might not be willing to talk about Pineda, who had a 2.75 ERA in June before a poor start to open July. But why not? Pineda, who will be a free agent after the 2017 season, might command a greater return than he actually is worth.
Pineda is 3-8 with a 5.38 ERA this season.
Yankees to keep Beltran?
The Yankees could end up being sellers at the deadline, especially since they are 7.5 games back of the AL East lead. One player whose name has been brought up in rumors is OF Carlos Beltran. But the veteran OF might not end up on the move,reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Sherman reports the Yankees still think they are in the Wild Card race and aren't looking to deal Beltran.
Still, as of the conclusion of the first half, the Yanks were not offering their players in a significant way, meaning the most likely outcome for Beltran is to remain the Yankees’ third-place hitter and perhaps be given the qualifying offer after the season.
Sherman says a deep market for OFs, also hurts the Yankees chances of moving Beltran.
