The MLB trade deadline on August 1st is rapidly approaching, and the trade rumors around the New York Yankees are starting to heat up. The Yankees are 52-49 and a strong start after the All-Star break has put them just four games back of the Wild Card. The Yankees have already dealt Aroldis Chapman for a solid return of prospects and might not be done making deals quite yet. With that in mind, here all the latest Yankees trade rumors you need to know.
Will Yankees Trade Andrew Miller?
Along with the Royals' Wade Davis, Miller is the top bullpen arm on the trade market. Jon Heyman says the club is at least listening to offers, although a deal is unlikely.
“No chance,” one Yankees connected person said of a potential Miller trade.
Of course that doesn’t mean Cashman will stop looking into anything and everything. One rival said the ask has been “prohibitive.” That’s no surprise considering Miller has two more years under contract at a reasonable rate (Chapman is a free agent) and no blemishes on his record.
Plenty of teams are in the market for bullpen help, so a trade could happen. But if it does, the Yankees will demand a hefty return.
New York And Chris Sale?
The Yankees were thought to be sellers at the deadline, but that might not be the case. Heyman reports the Yankees have some interest in trying to land starter Chris Sale.
Some people around the game are now speculating that the Yankees could surprise folks by reversing course and seriously jumping into the Chris Sale sweepstakes as a major buyer. General manager Brian Cashman has made clear they “aren’t waving the white flag,” and sources say, the Yankees have indeed called the Sox a couple times about Sale.
While it certainly isn’t unusual that they’d call (“just about everyone” has called the Chisox about the great Sale), the Yankees are indeed on the cusp of the race, plus they are hot and suddenly have a nice prospect stash, maybe for the first time in years, thanks especially to the inclusion of teen-aged wunderkind shortstop Gleyber Torres from the Chicago Cubs in the Chapman blockbuster.
Heyman lists the Yankees as fourth among teams that could land Sale. However, they're still a long-shot.
