Yankees Rumors: New York Unlikely To Bring Back Frazier, New Deal For Naehring, & More

The New York Yankees have been the clear winners of the offseason so far, but the team is far from done. With the Baltimore Orioles ending New York's pursuit of Manny Machado, the Yankees have now turned most of their attention to Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole. However, there are a few other players New York has their eye on as well. Here are all the latest Yankees news and rumors you need to know:

New deal expected to come for Tim Naehring
Yankees Vice President of Baseball Operations Tim Naehring, known as general manager Brian Cashman's right-hand man in the front office, is in line for a contract extension, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

With general manager Brian Cashman reupping with a five-year deal, it won't be long before Naehring also gets a multiyear deal. The former Red Sox infielder has been a big part of many decisions made by the Yankees front office the past few years.

"He's a tremendous evaluator of talent," Cashman said. "To be able to evaluate, it's a special talent. All teams have a population of people doing it, but he's in that select few who are really good at it."

Naehring was originally considered for New York's managerial vacancy earlier this offseason but expressed a desire to stay in the front office, where he has been since 2007.

New York unlikely to bring back Todd Frazier
New York traded Chase Headley to the San Diego Padres in order to clear more room under the luxury tax threshold ($197 million), giving them a better opportunity to pursue a top-end starting pitcher or third baseman on the open market.

The Yankees were reportedly trying to re-sign Todd Frazier with that space, but that deal isn't expected to get done, according to Brandan Kuty of NJ Advance Media.

Interest remains between the Yankees and free agent third baseman Todd Frazier, a pair of sources with knowledge of their correspondence have told NJ Advance Media.

But the team's mission to stay beneath the $197-million payroll luxury tax threshold for the 2018 season has kept the sides from speaking much this offseason, according to one of the sources.

Frazier hit .222 with 11 home runs and 32 RBIs in 66 games with the Yankees this season.

Yankees make offer for Michael Fulmer
According to Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Yankees made a trade offer for Detroit Tigers pitcher Michael Fulmer. Fulmer is 24-years-old and won the AL Rookie of the Year in 2016, so it's no surprise to see the Tigers turn down the offer.

Sources of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said the Yankees offered packages of prospects and young players similar to what was being offered to the Pirates for Cole.

Fulmer pitched 164.2 innings in 2017 and held a 10-12 record with a 3.83 ERA.
