Yankees Rumors: New York Outlines Plans For Extra Rest For Jordan Montgomery

The New York Yankees sent pitcher Jordan Montgomery to Triple-A earlier this week following the acquisitions of Sonny Gray and Jamie Garcia at the trade deadline, but have a plan for him in the coming months, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

Montgomery's demotion will allow New York to get back to a normal five-man starting rotation, but Montgomery is expected to be recalled at some point in the coming month as rosters expand on September 1.

Sending Montgomery also does two things for the Yankees. First, it allows them more wiggle room with his innings limit for the season by allowing them to space out his starts longer and make those starts lower. Secondly, having him in the minors for 10 more days gives the franchise one more year of control over his contract.

The rookie has been playing well this season, posting an overall 4.05 ERA with a 7-6 record and 111 strikeouts, more than any other rookie in the league. However, he has struggled over the last month, posting a 5.29 ERA in seven starts and 34 innings since the start of July.

New York recalled reliever Bryan Mitchell from Triple-A and will serve as a middle-innings guy out of the bullpen.
