Young bloomers are defying Yankees’ usual path

WASHINGTON — It wasn’t too long ago when the Yankees made it easy to despise them — assuming you didn’t revere them — because of the unabashed way they would throw around a checkbook. Payroll? Let other teams and other markets worry about payroll.

They would bury you in greenbacks.

Two hundred million here. One-fifty there. Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow there will be no salary cap.

There is still residue of those Gordon Gekko ways on the roster. Jacoby Ellsbury, for instance, is still a member of the Yankees, though if he were any more ghostly he would inhabit Demi Moore’s dreams.
