Yankees trade Stephen Tarpley to Marlins for James Nelson

The Yankees struck a deal with Derek Jeter’s Marlins on Wednesday, trading reliever Stephen Tarpley to Miami in exchange for minor league third baseman James Nelson and cash considerations.

Tarpley, 26, had been designated for assignment after the Yankees re-signed Brett Gardner to a one-year, $12 million contract.

The left-hander was mostly ineffective in 21 games for the Yankees last season, allowing six home runs in 24 ²/u2083 innings. He had a 6.93 ERA and was 1-0.

Nelson, 22, was a 15th-round pick in 2015 and hit .228/.279/.296 with four home runs and 36 RBIs in 121 games last season for Class-A Jupiter of the Florida State League.
