Yankees’ top draft pick Anthony Volpe receives a special call

TORONTO — Manager Aaron Boone placed a call to Anthony Volpe on Monday night after the high school shortstop was taken by the Yankees in the first round of the MLB draft.

“You could tell he was excited, you could hear the people in the background,’’ Boone said of the Delbarton School shortstop, who was selected with the 30th pick. “Hopefully it was a call that started welcoming him into our organization.’’

Volpe has committed to Vanderbilt, but the Yankees must have felt he was willing to sign to use a first-round pick on him.

Didi Gregorius went 0-for-5 for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday night at Buffalo.
