Yankees surprise son of Charleston victim with 1st pitch

The Yankees kicked off their 7th annual HOPE Week community initiative by hosting Charleston Southern ballplayer Chris Singleton and his family.

Singleton’s mother, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, was one of the nine victims in the Charleston church shooting in June. His attitude of “love over hate” has garnered national notice since his mom’s murder.

Asked if he considered himself a role model, he replied, “That’s what people keep saying. I don’t know if I’m a role model, but I feel honored when somebody says that to me.”

Singleton, 19, and his 15-year-old sister Camryn and 12-year-old brother Caleb met fellow Charleston native Brett Gardner, along with Alex Rodriguez and Dellin Betances on the “Today Show” in the morning.
