Hank Greenwald, the Yankees’ radio voice immediately before the John Sterling era began, died Tuesday at the age of 83.
Better known nationally as a longtime play-by-play man for the San Francisco Giants both before and after his stint in The Bronx, Greenwald teamed with Tommy Hutton on WABC Radio during the 1987 and 1988 seasons. Greenwald spent 16 seasons as the Giants’ play-by-play broadcaster. He called Giants games on radio from 1979-86 and then returned to the Giants after his Yankees stint and called their games until he stepped down in 1996.
Giants President Larry Baer called Greenwald a “broadcasting legend.
